Keep the Wreath Red

The Cortland Fire Department is happy to participate in the “Keep the Wreath Red” Campaign.

Christmas Wreath

What does it mean to keep the wreath red?

A wreath has been placed on the Cortland Fire Department Station adorned with red lights.   This wreath serves as a visual safety reminder when decorating for the holidays.  Anytime there is a fire caused by holiday decorations a red light will be replaced with a white light.  It is our goal at the Cortland Fire Department to “Keep the Wreath Red”

How can you help?

When decorating for the holidays remember:

  • Use a minimum amount of extension cords
  • Do not place candles or space heaters near combustable decorations
  • Keep your tree watered
  • Do not use any lights or decorations with frayed or broken electrical wires
  • Do not leave candles or wax warming plates unattended
  • Keep matches, lighters, and other open flame devices out of the reach of children and pets
  • Do not run extension cords across or through door ways and walk ways
  • Unplug or turn off lights and decorations when leaving the house or going to bed.
